LOCATION
Between the mountain and the sea.
Neither one lets you forget it.
The bay, the village, the mountain, the table. Everything about Kvarner is five minutes on foot or forty by car.
White pebble bay at the foot of Učka. Quiet, no harbour traffic. The water stays warm into October. The hiking trail to the summit starts at the end of the beach
Medieval stone town by the water with a morning market and Lungomare promenade to Opatija. In October, Marunada chestnut festival is a top European autumn food event.
A restaurant on a cliff at 388 metres, above a valley of sweet chestnut forest. The first in the Kvarner to receive a Michelin star. The terrace overlooks the full arc of the bay. Book ahead.
From Medveja, the trail to Vojak summit (1,401m) with an Austrian lookout and Alpine views takes 3-4 hours round trip. The Slap waterfall trail in Lovranska Draga is shorter and quieter. Vela Draga limestone canyon is a 30-minute drive.
The town that made this coast famous. Grand early-20th century hotels, the Angiolina Park, nine kilometres of promenade. Worth to spend an afternoon or an evening.
Most guests say the evenings are the reason they came back.
The light changes four times daily: silver in the morning, harsh at noon, amber late afternoon, then dusk after the sun sets behind Učka.
GETTING TO
AVARA
The most direct approach from the north is via Trieste, following the coast road through Opatija. The Učka tunnel shortens the journey from the Istrian interior but bypasses the mountain entirely — if you have time, the road over Poklon Pass is worth the extra thirty minutes.
Avara has parking for all residences. Transfer from Rijeka Airport can be arranged through the host on request.
